Ideas Onto Paper

As a graphic designer, I didn’t want just any old job, I wanted to work somewhere or work towards something I could be proud of. I knew that I wanted something diverse, different and functional. I decided to own my own invitation company. Part paper supplies, part graphic and part stamp/scrap book store so that I could help people create invitations that were unique, fun and memorable. I could make birthday invitation, mardi gras invitation , super bowl invitation, and so many more for every type of occasion.

I had to start somewhere. I needed a venue, I needed to see if I could make all these products, and I needed a website. I decided to start from home to see if I actually liked it first, next I told my friends and family that I would make invitations for them, for practice.

I made a baby shower footprint invitation for my best friend’s baby shower. I used a baby foot, rubber stamp to start the invitation and placed that on pink construction paper, she knew that it was a girl. Then, I added pink ribbon to the outside of the card. Inside, I had a baby picture of the mom to be, my friend and a baby picture of the father to be, her husband, James. Everyone loved the invitation design and the photo idea. Next, was my sister –in-law’s engagement invitation
I created a “scroll” looking piece of paper. It was dyed in coffee grounds to look old, then I used red calligraphy to write out the announcement. They were engaged in the Caribbean, so I decided to create a treasure map design and clues for the guests. I included a save the date magnetic treasure chest with their date and a faded copy of the two of them on the beach with burned edges. They were a huge success

and an inspiration for the rest the wedding planning. My sister-in-law wanted to see what kind of wedding invitation I could do and asked me for a sample invitation with a wedding invitation template that I had in mind. She loved what I thought of and decided to do my homemade wedding invitation.

I helped my mom create recipe cards, I created my own housewarming invitation and my grandparents 50th anniversary invitation! They were a shimmery gold with bright gold lettering. A picture of them today next to a picture of their wedding day were placed right next to each other. A special gold RSVP note card came with the invitation so that the RSVP could be sent separately.

My invitation creations became a success. Family and friends and their friends kept hiring me to support me in my efforts. It was time to launch the website and put an open sign on the outside of my business from a rented business loft site. When the day came, everyone received postcard advertising as a post card invitation created by me that announced the grand opening of my business!
